Having hosted many (more than 30) web sites ourselves, and also having helped many of our friends to host and set up their own sites, I have some observations on the matter
There are vast differences in the hosting packages available out there. Among the problems that are often only found out after signing the hosting contract and set up most of the site are
- no MySQL databases (or not enough of them)
- limited host space
- limited bandwidth (or Traffic as stated by some)
- no sub-domains
- limited email addresses
- little or no support – email or otherwise
- limited or no backups
- no help available if your site is hacked
- no assistance with the real Techie stuff – like security, e-commerce etc.
We have found two hosts that we have now worked with that do a great job with most things, VerveHosting gets our first prize for overall support and helpfulness – but Hostgator is not far behind.
